Bristol Radical Film Festival 2015:
Commemorating the 1975 Festival of Independent British Cinema
|
In 1975 the first ever Festival of Independent British Cinema took place at the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol. Organised by the filmmaker, writer, curator and dramatist, David Hopkins (1940-2004), the festival was a landmark event in the history of alternative film in Britain, exhibiting overtly political film alongside avant-garde and experimental work on everything from 35mm and super-8 to multiscreen video, with the express intention of encouraging a vibrant ‘independent’ film culture through the ‘cross fertilisation’ of different forms, approaches and intentions.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 Festival, the Bristol Radical Film Festival is organising a series of commemorative activities to take place in the first week of October 2015, culminating in a weekend of screenings and talks on October 10 and 11 at the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol, the original venue for the 1975 event.
