cmir 'lighting faces' masterclass with geoff boyle
Held at UWE, Bower Ashton TV Studio, 15th May 2015
(restricted to 20 participants for hands-on learning) Representative FEEDBACK : I think this was an amazing opportunity to learn from the best. Geoff spoke simply that even people who are not that familiar with industry jargon could understand him. He showed how to avoid common mistakes and how perception that you have to have 3 point lighting at all times is actually pretty wrong. One off the key points of the workshop was that he used same equipment we have access to and the results were astonishing. It’s the knowledge of how to use equipment what matters. As well it inspired me to carry out few experiments at home because as Geoff said the same as always only bigger. Only I will do the same only smaller just to practice techniques he used. I learned new techniques of lighting and aesthetics of the image. This workshop was as useful for DOP’s as to camera man, directors and producers. As Geoff shared his industry experience he gave good examples on how to work with director, camera and producers. If you can establish good relationship with other team members and show them you know what they are doing and vice versa it will only look good on you. And lastly but not the least opportunity to have a go at new camera AjA CION was one of the kind. This is a brand new camera which just appeared on the market and who knows when we would have a chance like this to have access to it. Considering student films are low budget and quite often cannot afford to have big cranes for heavy RED ONE or track due to logistics this was a good example how one camera could solve these problems with the help of steady cam.
