During the course of his research-based PhD James is exploring the way in which the opportunities of the data age can support and enhance learning. Based on the principle that learning is inexorably embedded in culture as mobile social media increasingly blurs the line between our online and offline selves, James is working to develop augmentative, embedded recommender systems. These will draw on big data sources to enable greater equality of access to cultural resources, empowering individuals to take conscious control of their learning and expand their awareness of the world around them on their terms.
James is a lecturer in education, having worked in the FE and HE sectors. He has delivered and managed postgraduate teacher training across a number of organisations. In addition he is employed as a research assistant for the EU funded ‘Learning Layers’ project which aims to scale up technology for informal learning in SME clusters. Within this James is working on help-seeking tools for Healthcare professionals to develop their personal learning networks.
