The critical thinker and political activist Stuart Hall died earlier this week. John Akomfrah’s 90 minute documentary is a wonderful tribute to one of Britain’s most important political voices of the late twentieth century. The film weaves together biography, archive and excerpts from Stuart Hall’s writing into a beautiful piece of poetic documentary, that also serves as a fitting essay on migration, identity and race in modern Britain, all set to a soundtrack built around the jazz music of Miles Davis. This is part of a screening series organised by the Creative Media Research Group and the Centre for Moving Image Research. |
